Spanwell’s large S Hooks play a role in Bakken oil play. If you haven’t heard already, there is a modern day gold rush going on in Williston, ND. It is known as the Bakken oil play and is one of the largest, unconventional crude oil plays in the United States covering as much as 25,000 sq miles in the Williston Basin, which straddles the Montana-North Dakota border and stretches into Canada.

Many major oil and gas companies have drilling rigs in the Bakken region including our customer, Hess Corporation. They recently bought 800 large S Hooks to organize cables on their wellheads or as they call it “hooks on Christmas tree.”

There is an interesting story behind this unusual application of Spanwell’s extra large S Hooks. Neither they nor we were aware of a specific application for S hooks on wellheads. Based on our previous experience with refineries and power plants, we included Hess in our postcard mailing to Oil Companies. (Sign up now if you aren’t on our mailing list).

Soon after receiving our postcard, they found the perfect application for organizing the multitude of cables that sit on top of wellheads. Our S hooks solved the problem of organizing cables on wellheads safely and economically.

It also opened up a huge new market for Spanwell’s S hooks since there are 5,000 wells existing there now. Over 2,100 new wells will be drilled this year alone and it is expected that 60,000 wells will be drilled over the next 5 years.

Do you use one of our large S Hooks at your industrial workplace? We would love to hear from you about your S hook application. Buy S hooks from our online store.

We have heard some incredible tales of how people and companies have found our large and extra large S hooks. Here are two real life cases to illustrate the point.

Case #1: A recent customer said he had searched the Internet for an hour looking for an S Hook to “hang welding leads.” He was frustrated because he had found too many S Hooks that were not what he was looking for. Then he found us by using the search term “hanging or hang welding lead” and found “exactly what he was looking for!” He also suggested that we should mention using our heavy duty S hooks for “extension cord hanging” and/or “hanging extension cords.”

Case #2: A long-time customer who was the Maintenance Supervisor at the Conoco refinery in Billings, MT moved to the Ferndale refinery in Washington State. He took one of our solid aluminum S hooks with him and showed it to the people at the new location. That’s how the WA plant found out about Spanwell’s S Hooks.

Fortunately for us, this happens all the time. People will see or use a hook at one site or job and then will take a hook with them to the next project and give a sample to the project manager, turnaround planner, etc. for use on the next job.

Read more about applications for large S Hooks or safety hooks. Have an application? Buy S hooks online.

How did you find out about our S-Hooks?
